Covid-19 and your pets health
As a healthcare facility, we already employ methods to routinely disinfect exam rooms and other areas on an ongoing basis, including between examinations, to ensure we minimize the risk of disease transmission between patients and we disinfect public areas daily. In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, we will be increasing the level of disinfection in our hospital to include more frequent treatment of the waiting area, counters, point of sale machines, entrance doors, and washrooms. We are also asking any staff to stay home should they suspect they are infected with not only COVID-19 but any other illnesses with flu like symptoms that may compromise individuals with compromised immune systems or respiratory ailments.
When it comes to your pets, it is still uncertain if COVID-19 can be transmitted from pets to humans though there is some evidence that dogs can be carriers. At this time, there is no evidence that cats can carry the virus. The following is a link to an article that provides some information on the subject.
It should be noted that we do have a canine coronavirus vaccination that can be administered as part of an annual distemper vaccination but this vaccine is specific to an intestinal coronavirus and has no impact on the respiratory form of the virus.
We will be continuing to monitor the situation as it progresses and will provide additional updates should circumstances change. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your pet and COVID-19 or regarding our response during the pandemic, please do not hesitate to contact us
We are currently accepting new patients; please contact us today to book an appointment.
Medical Care Services
Whether young or old, annual exams are a great way to keep your loved ones healthy. A wellness examination is a complete physical examination that may include diagnostic testing such as blood work, urinalysis, and checking a stool sample for parasites. Regular appointments not only allow us to detect hidden issues in their earliest stages, but they're also a great opportunity for your pet to bond with your Nanaimo veterinarian and grow comfortable with our clinic.
Before your pet can be successfully treated for any malady, he or she must be accurately diagnosed, which is not as easy as it sounds. The veterinarian team at Mahalo can provide pet diagnostics in Nanaimo and the Vancouver Island area.
Just like humans, pets need vaccinations to protect them from possibly fatal illnesses. Even indoor pets run the risk of picking up harmful viruses, especially if they are boarded often or have contact with other pets. At Mahalo, we'll work with you to develop a vaccination program that ballances your pet's health and lifestyle.
Healthy teeth and gums are an important aspect to your pet’s overall health. At Mahalo Veterinary Hospital we provide a full range of dental services for pets in Nanaimo and Vancouver Island, including cleanings, prophylaxis, X-rays, and extractions, to help prevent the onset of dental disease.
When we need to figure out what’s wrong with your pet, we routinely use x-rays to help identify the cause of the problem. X-rays provide valuable information about a pet’s bones, gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, and genitourinary system. We offer digital radiology that allows us to provide you with a quick diagnosis for your pet.
Parasite control is an important service for pets, whether they’re often outdoors, or mainly in the house. Protecting your pets from fleas, ticks, and other parasites can prevent some of the illnesses they can carry and allergic reactions. We can help eradicate your pet’s parasite problem or provide medication to prevent them.
We are committed to providing comprehensive workups on itchy, allergic pets that help lead to cures or to the formulation of a tailor-made management plan for the patient.
Ultrasound use is quick and painless, it uses sound waves to allow us to look inside your pet’s body to help us diagnose their problems. Abominial, cardiac, soft tissue and joint, our services are provided through our partners at Sonovue
We offer a broad range of soft tissue surgeries for pets that require surgery to treat conditions involving the gastrointestinal system, mass removals and more.
We perform corrective surgeries for conditions relating diseases or ailments involving bones, joints, ligaments/tendons, and associated muscles.
For your convenience, our hospital has an in-house pharmacy, enabling you to pick up your pet’s medication at the time of your visit. We also have access to specialty compounding pharmacies for unique fomulations and doses required for our smallest of patients like birds and pocket pets.
We can help you make informed decisions about your pet’s diet – counseling you on which foods will be appropriate based on your pet’s needs.
If your pet is a nervous traveller, or if it’s difficult to bring your pet in, we can come to your home to perform veterinary care.
Should your pet ever become lost, a tattoo or microchip implant will allow a veterinary clinic or animal shelter to identify them and get your pet quickly back to you.
