Pet Dental Care in Nanaimo & Vancouver Island – A Healthy Mouth is a Happy Pet

Just like people, pets can suffer from periodontal (dental) diseases. In fact, this type of illness is one of the most frequently diagnosed health problems in pets. Here, at Mahalo Veterinary Hospital, we provide a full range of dental care services for pets in Nanaimo and Vancouver Island, including cleanings, prophylaxis, X-rays, and extractions, to help prevent the onset of dental disease. Our new clinic has a dental x-ray that features advanced technology.

Why Your Pet Needs Dental Care

Dental disease is common in pets, affecting over two-thirds of cats and three-quarters of dogs over the age of 3.

Periodontal disease includes gingivitis (inflammation visible as reddening of the gums), and periodontitis (the loss of bone and soft tissue support from around the teeth). If left untreated, these diseases will cause loss of your pet’s teeth. Periodontal infection may even cause disease elsewhere in your pet’s body when harmful bacteria from the mouth enter the blood stream.

Common Signs of Pet Dental Disease

It can be difficult for a pet owner to see the effects of periodontal disease, especially as pets will seldom show obvious signs of irritation or pain even with severe cases. Here are some signs of dental disease to look out for in your pet:

 Bad breath

 Excessive drooling

Yellow or brown buildup (tartar) on the teeth

 Red, swollen, or bleeding gums

 Pawing at the face

 Loose teeth

Changes in eating or chewing habits

 Decreased energy

 Depression

Even if your pet doesn’t exhibit these symptoms, we recommend scheduling a visit with your veterinarian at least once a year, so we can evaluate your pet’s dental health. If left unchecked, accumulated bacteria and food debris around your pet’s teeth will lead to deterioration of soft tissue and bone surrounding the teeth. This, in turn, may result in irreversible periodontal disease, tooth loss, and possibly expensive oral surgery.
